Health Education

The goal of our health education program is to provide students with the education and prevention strategies in order to avoid needing intervention later in life. Our health educators are committed to giving students the tools to make responsible physical, mental, emotional and social decisions. To accomplish this, developmentally-appropriate educational lesson plans correlated to the MA Comprehensive Health Frameworks are carefully designed. These lessons assist students in making healthy nutritional choices, understand the dangers of substance misuse, identify mental health issues and implement appropriate conflict resolution and interpersonal skills. At various points in a student's educational experience, he/she will have the opportunity to study other health topics such as growth and development, bullying and violence prevention, first aid and CPR, and other current health-related issues. To remain up to date with continually evolving health education topics, faculty will continue to use district specific data collected by SPS Personnel and data gathered through annual Youth Risk Behavior Surveys to keep our curriculum relevant.

In addition to Health Education programming during the school day, the following supporting/extension opportunities are also available to enrich student experiences:

  • SADD (Students Against Destructive Decisions)
  • Allies Not Bystanders Club fosters tolerance and acceptance of ALL people. Weekly meetings consist of activities and discussions that lead to greater social awareness of self and others.
  • The Gay-Straight Alliance exists to promote acceptance in Scituate High School, Gates Middle School and beyond.

  • Grades 9 - 12: Receive one quarter of a school year of health education per year taught by health teachers.
